It’s Not Her by Mary Kubica – Review | Overhyped or Worth the Read?

If you’ve seen It’s Not Her by Mary Kubica all over Bookstagram and are wondering if it’s worth the hype, here’s my honest, spoiler-free review. I went into this one with really high expectations. When a thriller is everywhere, I expect something that completely pulls me in and keeps me hooked. Unfortunately, that wasn’t quite my experience. This It’s Not Her book review is a bit of a mixed one for me. There were definitely elements I enjoyed, especially the multiple POV structure. I usually love when thrillers are told from different perspectives, and here it was done well. It added depth to the story and kept things moving. However, I really struggled with the teenage perspective. It just didn’t fully work for me and made it harder to stay engaged with the story overall. As a psychological thriller, It’s Not Her had all the right ingredients, but the twists didn’t land the way I expected. Review: My Husband’s Wife by Alice Feeney

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC in exchange for my honest thoughts.

My Husband’s Wife was my first introduction to Alice Feeney. The premise pulled me in immediately and the first chapters felt strong. I was ready for a twisty thriller that grabbed me by the shoulders and refused to let go. Instead, the pacing slowed down and I found myself waiting for the story to find its rhythm again.

The short POV chapters usually help me stay engaged, but here they made the story feel divided. Instead of layering tension, the structure created distance. It often felt like I was reading two different stories that were not ready to meet.

Around the eighty percent mark, I was still unsure how I felt. So much was happening, yet the story still felt slow. Some character choices and moments did not land for me. Birdy’s rudeness felt unnecessary. Several scenes did not serve the plot. The random sex scenes felt especially out of place.

The final twenty percent delivered one twist after another. Some were predictable, others were surprising, and together they created a very intense ending. I appreciated the final reveal because I truly did not expect it.

In the end, I enjoyed the experience more than I expected. I was frustrated at times, but never bored. I am curious enough to read more from Feeney and would love to hear recommendations from readers who know her work well.
