Book Review: The Drowning Place by Sarah Hilary

This was my first experience reading Sarah Hilary, and I went into it hoping to discover a new detective series to follow. Overall, this turned out to be an enjoyable read, though one that clearly feels like a series opener. The beginning was on the slower side, focusing heavily on introductions, backstory, and the private lives of the characters. While this is often necessary in the first book of a series, it did make the pacing feel a bit drawn out at times. One aspect that didn’t fully work for me was the inclusion of characters seeing and speaking to ghosts. I understand the intention behind it, showing how the past lingers and haunts, but I personally felt there were more effective ways this could have been conveyed. Where the book really worked for me was in its twists and character work. The writing was strong, the mystery kept me engaged, and both the DI and DS felt layered and well-developed. By the end, I was invested enough to want to see where the series goes next. Overall,...

Book Review: Words of Friendship by Jake Biggin

I was so excited when my ARC request for Words of Friendship by Jake Bigging got approved. The second I saw it, I immediately thought of my most gifted book ever, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy. That book has been a constant companion of mine and one I’ve pressed into the hands of countless friends. So you can imagine how quickly I hit request when Words of Friendship popped up.

I am so glad I did. This little book is whimsical, comforting, and quietly profound. It follows a young girl as she learns about trust, friendship, and most importantly, loving herself. It is full of gentle mantras and bite-sized wisdoms you can actually carry with you into everyday life. They are the kind of reminders you need when you are spiraling or feeling a little lost.

It is not only the words that make it shine. The illustrations are soft, simple, and very effective. The pared-down colors and drawings perfectly match the tone. Nothing is overdone, everything is just enough.

I know for sure that everyone I have gifted Mackesy’s book to will be getting Words of Friendship as well. It feels like a warm hug in book form, one I will return to again and again when I need grounding or a reminder of what really matters.

Without a doubt ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐/5.
